JUNIOR CRICKET @ TROJANS

Trojans Cricket Club is part of the larger Trojans Club which is based just north of Southampton, just off Stoneham Lane (SO50 9HT). We have around 180 juniors training every week of the summer term, led by volunteer ECB qualified coaches and assisted by parent helpers. For those in our U9 squads upwards, there is the opportunity to test their skills by playing against other local clubs in the Serious Cricket Hampshire Junior Championships.

Any young person wanting to learn or improve their cricket is welcome at Trojans! We start with children in Year R - Year 2 who can join our ECB All Stars programme which runs for 8 weeks in the summer term, starting in May.

Next steps is to join our Junior Cricket provision, which is for U9s (based on birthday at 1 Sep 2023) all the way through to U17s (those in the first year of college). As your child progresses through the programme, they move up from soft ball to hard ball cricket and the bowling becomes faster and their game play more tactical and precise. As they reach 15+ we encourage and support players as they transition to playing on Saturday afternoons in our Senior teams. (With 6 senior teams available, there are plenty of options to allow them to find their level).

At Trojans we believe that everyone should enjoy the sport so we encourage everyone to take an active part in a match - not just fielding. We encourage good sporting attitudes, respect for umpires and other officials and to look after equipment.

ALL STARS @ TROJANS

All Stars is the perfect way to get your young child into cricket. It is suitable for children in Year R - Year 2.and sometimes for Year 3s but we usually find they would rather do club cricket.

Children get a personalised t-shirt and each week they try their hand at a series of challenges to develop their batting, bowling, catching, throwing and communication skills.

Parents are strongly encouraged to turn up and get stuck in with their child, so don't forget your trainers!

Starts Friday 10 May 5:30 -6:30 for 8 sessions.

Cost: £30

Booking is direct to the ECB rather than through Trojans. See links below.

WHICH AGE GROUP:

Age group upper limits are set by the players birthday at 1 September before the season started. For most players they will simply follow their school year. Very occasionally we have players that play up a year group and while players are transitioning from soft ball to hard ball there can be some over lap in the training groups they attend. Any player playing outside their normal school year group would need to have had a discussion with the Trojans coaches or Junior Co-ordinator first.

DATES:

Outdoor training starts on Monday 22nd April and finishes Friday 19 July - although coaches may choose to put on additional training.

NOTE: All Stars will start on 10 May.

Matches for most teams starts on Sunday 5 May and the main league goes through until the 27 July but the summer social matches continue through to September 1.

Trojans play junior matches as part of the Serious Cricket Hampshire Junior Championships (SCHJC).

In 2024 we have 14 teams entered.

The competition has two tiers within each age group.

Tier 1 - competitive to challenge and develop players in this age range

Tier 2 - more social developing skills, enjoying the sport or new to this age group

This year we have 3 teams in U9 and U11s, The Red team playing in Tier 1 and the Blue and Gold teams playing in Tier 2.

Girls U11 are playing in Tier 2.

U13s have U13 Red (Tier1) and U13 Blue (Tier 2).

U15s both Reds and Blues are in Tier 2.

Girls U16 are a combined league with all abilities.

U17s and U19s do not have tiers.

For more details on fixtures and leagues follow links below.

WHAT IS THERE FOR GIRLS

For our youngest girls YR-Y2 we suggest starting out by doing All Stars and you can find out more at All Stars Cricket. www.allstarscricket.co.uk

For those in Y3-Y6 you have lots of choices! You can join in with the open U9s training or you might prefer the girls only U11 team, which we call our Soft Ball Girls squad. Training at the same time as the U9s there are the same focus on skills, but with a slightly different vibe. Our girls (even the Y5 and Y6s) can play in their own girls softball matches, but also the U9 matches and make an essential part of the teams.

Around Y6 (and it varies from player to player) girls are often ready to transition to using a hard ball and our Hard Ball Girls squad is a fantastic bunch of young cricketers from Y6 through to Y11! The older girls are very supportive and encouraging of the younger ones and everyone enjoys getting to know each other. At the moment we do not have a U13 girls team, only an U16 one. So those in Y6- Y8 get match practise with the U11 teams until they feel ready for U16 matches.

And finally when they are ready to continue into the senior section, our Southern Stars team is ready to welcome them. Look at their team page for mote details.

For those girls who do not wish to transition to hard ball cricket, our W10 team takes girls in Y8 and upwards.

MATCH SHIRTS

CRICKET EQUIPMENT

Abdo Guard/Box

When starting out in hard ball cricket it is essential to put safety first. Batters must be wearing an abdo guard (box) to protect their pubic area (yes girls too except theirs are a little different in shape). These can be purchased for a few pounds online or in sports shops. Girls should look for "female abdo guard" when searching online.

Top tip: For younger children these fit well and hygienically when wearing "double undies" rather than the special underwear available.

Helmets

A good fitting helmet is very important and the club have only a few to lend. Spending money on a helmet that you know the history of is very important as with any safety helmet and we would not recommend buying second-hand as you do not now the integrity of the surface. Players should always check their guards are properly screwed on and that the helmet is fitting properly. Here is an interesting article about it form the ECB news feed.

WELFARE AND SAFE-GUARDING

Trojans CC's Welfare Officer has been trained by Hampshire Cricket and can be contacted via the website or below. If you have concerns about the welfare of any Trojans cricketers please contact our Welfare Officer.

SAFE HANDS

Trojans also uses the Safe Hands system recommended by the ECB to register and monitor all coaches and regular volunteers, team captains .To find out more about the Safe Hands Management system, watch this video.
